Introducing Rylie Mussman, Demonstrating Leadership in Athletics and Academics

WinWon Scholar Rylie Mussman is a remarkable student-athlete, volunteer, and healthcare administration major at Mount Mercy University. Initially unsure about playing collegiate volleyball, it was Rylie’s high school coach and the welcoming atmosphere and staff at Mount Mercy that ultimately pushed her to pursue her passion. "My coach instantly sold me on the team with her philosophies for coaching and the family-like culture she fosters. Meeting her and one of the professors here made my decision easy," Rylie recalls.

As a freshman, Rylie quickly made her mark, becoming the starting libero for the women’s volleyball team. Her defensive skills and relentless work ethic earned her Honorable Mention All-Conference in her sophomore year and Second Team All-Conference in her junior year. She also joined the 1000 Dig Club and was named Molten Women's Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week. Coach Marlon praises Rylie’s dedication: "Rylie has been one of the hardest working athletes in our gym from day one. She has very high expectations for herself and never backs away from competition."

Rylie is a rising senior majoring in Healthcare Administration with a minor in Biology. Initially a biochemistry major, she found her true calling in healthcare administration, appreciating the business side of the healthcare field. Rylie is actively involved off the court, too. She’s a member of the ENACTUS Club, participating in entrepreneurial activities that benefit the community, and helps plan campus events like the Market at the Mount.

Family plays a crucial role in Rylie’s life. "My family is one of the most important things to me. You can see them at games sitting in the front row. My mom and dad rarely miss a game, along with my five brothers and sisters," Rylie shares. This strong family support system has been a cornerstone of her success, providing her with the motivation and encouragement needed to excel.

Ever passionate about her sport, Rylie coaches club volleyball on the weekends. "Helping the youth and the girls has been really rewarding. As a coach, you learn the game more, and things come easier while playing," she explains. Coaching allows Rylie to give back to the sport she loves while also helping young athletes develop their skills and passion for the game.

As Rylie prepares for her senior year, she reflects on her journey with a sense of excitement and gratitude. "It's bittersweet to leave Mount Mercy and volleyball behind, but I’m excited to start my future and continue to progress in my career," she says.

We’re excited to honor Rylie as a WinWon Scholar for her dedication for volleyball and academics. We know she’ll bring the same power and passion to her final year at Mount Mercy and to her future career in healthcare.
