Dylan Holmes, Making an Impact at Baker University
WinWon Scholar Dylan Holmes is a standout student-athlete, volunteer, and physics major at Baker University. A skilled volleyball player, Dylan initially considered playing at the collegiate level until she discovered bowling. What started as a casual interest quickly became a passion. Dylan excelled, making it to the state competition in her first year. "I didn't do great at state, but I loved it," she said with a smile: "I realized I could take this more seriously, so I started getting coached and practicing a lot more." Her dedication paid off, earning her a spot on Baker University's bowling team.
A physics major and computer science minor, Dylan's academic goal is to become an engineer. "Physics just makes sense to me. It's always clicked in my brain, and I enjoy the challenge." Her passion for physics and engineering led her to participate in a prestigious Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program at Kansas University where she worked on removing harmful substances from water. She’s consistently earned a place on the Dean's List and received both the Presidential Scholarship and the Liston Award Scholarship. She also serves as a physics tutor, helping her peers navigate challenging coursework.
"I enjoy the challenge."
Even with her demanding athletic and academic schedules, Dylan works as a Wildcat Welcome Leader and Summer Orientation Leader helping new students transition smoothly into college life. She also works as a University Admissions Ambassador and tour guide, showcasing her dedication to creating a welcoming environment for prospective students.
Dylan also spends much of her time volunteering. She works with Operation Gratitude, an organization she started working with in high school that sends care packages and paracord bracelets to military personnel. “It's amazing to think that something I made could help someone in such a significant way." She’s also a volunteer coach with the Lawrence Juniors Volleyball Club, hoping to inspire a love for the sport in younger athletes.
"Volunteering is incredibly rewarding," Dylan said: "It allows you to have a positive impact on others. There are so many different ways to volunteer, and each one is valuable."
As Dylan approaches her final year at Baker University, she credits her time as a student-athlete for the many lessons she’s learned. "Being a college athlete has taught me so much about teamwork, time management, and resilience," she said. With her sister joining her at Baker University as a bowler, she looks forward to sharing her experience. "I'm excited for the future," she said: "There are so many opportunities ahead, and I can't wait to see where they lead."
We’re excited to honor Dylan as a WinWon Scholar for her dedication to bowling, academics, and volunteerism. Her impact at Baker University has not gone unnoticed and we look forward to seeing what she does next!
