Coach's Corner: Dustin Galyon

Leading Friends University Golf with Passion, Purpose, and Perseverance

Dustin Galyon’s journey to becoming the Head Men’s Golf Coach and Director of Golf at Friends University is one marked by unexpected turns, steadfast faith, and a deep commitment to mentorship. Now in his fourth season leading the Falcons, Galyon has turned a newly restarted golf program into a nationally ranked powerhouse, emphasizing character, community, and excellence both on and off the course.

A Unique Path to Coaching

Unlike many coaches, Galyon didn’t start his career in golf. A former collegiate basketball player, his initial path led him to public speaking and admissions work. A series of mentor-driven conversations and what he describes as divine prompting steered him into coaching basketball. After several years of success, including leading a nationally ranked team, Galyon retired from basketball to pursue a passion he had long reserved for his later years—coaching golf.

When Friends University approached him about restarting their golf program, Galyon initially declined. However, after a year of discernment and prayer, he accepted the challenge. Four years later, his team has made back-to-back NAIA National Tournament appearances and currently ranks 10th in the nation, a testament to his leadership and vision.

Coaching Philosophy: Opportunity and Responsibility

Galyon describes coaching as a dual role: an incredible opportunity and an even greater responsibility. Early in his career, he learned that winning games alone isn’t enough—building relationships and cultivating a positive culture are equally vital. He credits key mentors for shaping his understanding of leadership, particularly emphasizing the importance of love and joy in the coaching process.

“I learned to love the heck out of my players and to find joy in the process,” Galyon explained. “Winning comes and goes, but the journey and relationships are what truly matter.”

Building a Program from the Ground Up

Restarting a golf program was no small feat, but Galyon approached the challenge with humility and curiosity. He sought advice from experienced coaches and this openness to learning allowed him to create a program rooted in intentionality and excellence.

At Friends, Galyon prioritizes building systems of care to ensure his players feel valued beyond their athletic abilities. He fosters a culture where players are encouraged to take ownership of their growth, both as athletes and individuals. This approach has led to sustained success and a strong sense of community within the team.

Recruiting with Purpose

Galyon’s recruiting philosophy centers on finding players who embody toughness, humility, and a willingness to grow. He values character and resilience, often evaluating recruits on how they handle adversity on the course.

“When I watch a player, I hope to see them on a day when things aren’t clicking,” Galyon said. “I want to see if they can find a way to score and if their attitude remains steady, whether they’re five over or five under.”

Transparency is a cornerstone of his recruiting process. Galyon ensures recruits understand the program’s values and non-negotiables, creating a foundation of honesty and alignment.

Lessons for Aspiring Coaches

For young coaches, Galyon emphasizes the importance of community, continuous learning, and staying true to their values. He co-authored The Impactful Coaching Project, a book outlining his philosophy on mentoring 21st-century athletes. Central to his approach are the “three C’s”:

  1. Care: Establish systems to show players they are valued beyond the game.
  2. Competence: Continuously seek knowledge and feedback to grow as a coach.
  3. Constancy: Build a consistent culture that defines how the team operates on and off the field.

Galyon also advises coaches to delegate responsibilities and embrace simplicity. “Find people who do it well, learn from them, and focus on what truly matters,” he said.

Inspiring the Next Generation

Beyond his coaching achievements, Galyon is dedicated to mentoring young athletes and coaches. He encourages players to find programs that align with their values and offers this advice:

“If you couldn’t play your sport tomorrow, would this still be the place where you’d want to grow? If the answer is yes, then that’s where you belong.”

Looking Ahead

As Friends University Golf continues to climb the national rankings, Galyon remains focused on cultivating a program that balances competitive excellence with holistic development. His unwavering commitment to faith, mentorship, and community-building ensures that the Falcons are poised for continued success on the course and beyond.
